In 2013, Siddharth P. Malhotra acquired the rights to Brad Cohen's 2005 autobiography Front of the Class and started writing the screenplay along with Ambar Hadap and Ganesh Pandit, with Ankur Chaudhry and Raaj Mehta joining them later.[4][5] The film was titled Hichki, which Malhotra felt was a suitable word for describing prejudice and social stigma against Tourette disorder.[6] His second directorial venture after We Are Family (2010), Malhotra had several failed attempts to find a production house over four years. According to him, the production houses believed that the film lacked commercial viability, telling him: \"Who would watch the story of a teacher suffering from Tourette syndrome\" His wife, Sapna, suggested Yash Raj Films to him, although he was initially reluctant as he had faced many rejections. He met the company's owner Aditya Chopra to narrate the screenplay, and the latter liked it. Chopra, however, was busy with his project Befikre (2016) and asked Maneesh Sharma, who would co-produce Hichki with him, to listen to the rest.[5]
An emotional Shah Rukh Khan spoke to Rani Mukerji about the biggest hichki or roadblock in his life, which he has overcome to become the great success that he is. When Rani, who is currently promoting her upcoming film Hichki, quizzed the King Khan about it, the actor immediately responded by saying that the death of his parents was the biggest hichki that he faced.
Rani Mukerji is back to woo us in her next, Hichki, and judging by the trailer and the amazing reviews that she got from B-Towners , we are super excited. Rani plays a teacher with Tourette syndrome, a neurological condition that leads to motor and vocal tics - in Rani's case, hiccups - and early reviews suggest that this is a film that is bound to make you cry. While we are sure are excited to watch the powerhouse of talent on the screen again, we've decided to throwback to some of Rani's earlier performances that made us give her a standing ovation. Before you book your tickets, here's a nice reminder of what an amazing actor Rani truly is!
This was essentially a simple love story at heart, but probably one of the few films of its time that looked at relationships realistically and without sanskaari Sooraj Barjatya glasses. The love story of a young couple as they try and make their marriage work was heartwarming and Rani, who played a young college girl and later a wife, was a sheer delight to watch on-screen.
Rani Mukerji is back and how! Its a treat watching her on the silver screen. She proves that neither marital status or motherhood can deter ones talent and box-office success. Yes, she has aged and cannot be compared to twenty something actresses anymore. But, she looks great for forty and more importantly, she is a fine actress. Rani infuses oodles of charm to the character of Naina Mathur and makes her endearing and inspiring. If Rani Mukerji keeps going forward in the same momentum , she will surely be remembered as one of the finest and most respected Indian actors of all time.
The movie is not about Rani Mukerjis hicki alone, but the hichki of every character in the movie. It is sweet irony that Naina Mathur plays a saviour who helps the other characters in the movie overcome all their hichkis. The movie shows us how truth and positivity has a cascading effect on everyone. Naina Mathur brings a sea-change in the people around her, thereby the entire ethos of the school.
Hichki is a good family entertainer. It is in particular, a must-watch for students and educators for its lessons on empathy and the powerful impact that a teacher has on the students morale and self-esteem.
The times, they are changing. Years back, a 40-year-old actress would not be getting to play a lead role with no male lead opposite her. Even if she had gone on a maternity break at the peak of her career, Bollywood and the country at large would not have had accepted to watch a film without a male lead. But Rani Mukerji's latest Hichki is perhaps a change in the right direction. The change came sometime in 2015 and made its place in 2017 with films like Piku, Anaarkali Of Aaraah and the recent Tumhari Sulu - where women took center stage sans the stereotypical hero. Devoid of the frills and melodrama or a hero, Rani Mukerji's first film post maternity break, Hichki, rests firmly on her delicate, petite shoulders. And the actress solely takes the story and the film forward. Mukerji plays Naina Mathur, a qualified teacher in search of a teaching job. While her records are meritorious, it is her disorder that proves be to the biggest roadblock or rather the hiccup or hichki in her career. Naina suffers from a neurological disorder called Tourette Syndrome that has Naina making unusual noises and hand movements in the middle of a sentence. Sort of a stammer, that most people think she creates knowingly but in reality are not in control by Naina. Her syndrome leads to job rejections multiple times until she lands herself a job mid-term at the prestigious St Notker's School to teach a group of students who are shunned by the rest of the school. 153554b96e
