Marathi literature, which began as an important part of the literary tradition in the 13th century Chaulukyas and 14th century Yadavas, is the earliest form of literature in Marathi, and is recorded as having nearly 20,000 verses. It is the earliest form of literature in Indian languages, predating the poems of the Sanskrit (Sanskrit) poet Kalidasa. However, Marathi literature includes not only poetry but also satire, biography, drama, essays, and prose. It also includes the adaptation of classical Indian literature in Marathi, such as the reworking of the Sanskrit plays and the legend of Vishnu which is the Bhagavata Purana.
The earliest evidence of the use of Marathi as the official language of the Maratha Empire dates back to the 11th century. The Marathi people were already part of the empire before this, and the Maratha language must have been the language of the court and administration as well as trade before this. The 15th century was a great era for Maratha literature and for Marathi language. Vallabhati's Tirtha consists of 10,000 verses of poetry. With this, Marathi language attained a new milestone. Narsinhrao-Deva's Visaprasanna also stands out for the style, clarity and pace of which it is written in. They are a testimony to the style of Marathi language in the 16th century. Any list of the greatest kings of Maharashtra would end with Shivaji or Akbar, since Shivaji is considered by most Marathi nationalists to be the founder of the Maratha Empire while Akbar is revered as "Lord of the Marathas".
As in other parts of India, the Maratha upper castes, or Brahmin castes, played an important role in the development of Marathi culture and literature. The Shivaji-era poet-writer Bhima Kalacharya, for instance is revered as the "Sanskrit Vikshat Pampa". In the late 17th century, the Maratha kingdom attained its peak and became a significant power in the Indian subcontinent. d2c66b5586
