Our Walnut wood is kiln dried.Kiln drying is an effective way of drying green (freshly cut) lumber in a controlled environment to a specific moisture content. The resulting dried wood is stronger and more stable.
Walnut lumber heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown also has some darker brown streaks. Color can sometimes contain a grey, purple, or a reddish color cast. While the sapwood can be a pale yellow-gray to nearly white. The principal uses of Walnut are furniture, cabinetry, gunstocks, interior paneling, veneer, turned items, and namely small wooden objects and novelties items.
While Walnut wood is typically easy to work provided the grain is straight and regular. Planer tearout can sometimes be a problem as a result to surfacing pieces with irregular or figured grain. Walnut glues, stains, and finishes well, (though walnut is rarely stained). In addition responds well to steam bending.
Black Walnut, also known as Walnut or American Walnut, is one of the finest North American lumber species. Along with Mahogany and Cherry, Walnut set the standard for early American furniture. The Walnut tree is hearty, shade tolerant, and can grow to be quite large both in width and in height. Because it is one of the last trees to leaf and one of the first to drop its leaves, Black Walnuts are not great lawn trees. They also give off an acidic residue that kills surrounding acid sensitive plants. But as a lumber producer, Walnuts are superior to many other species. The trunks grow straight and clear and yield a high percentage of FAS lumber. The texture of Walnut lumber is peaceful, the grain can usually be worked from either direction, and it takes a rich finish. Due to over harvesting the availability of high quality Walnut has diminished and the grading standards are more relaxed for this species. A FAS board only has to be about 67% clear of defects while most species need to be 84% usable. Most Walnut lumber is steamed right after it is sawn. This darkens the sapwood by pulling the browns from the heartwood, basically homogenizing the color of the board. We do not steam our Black Walnut, leaving all of the beautiful browns, golds and purples to tell their stories.

Walnut is the darkest of the hardwoods and is known for its rich brown color. This hardwood adds an elegant look to your various interior projects. Our Rustic Walnut is full of character and can make your project, truly, one of a kind. Select between a 10 board feet box and a 20 board feet box. Boxes are packed with boards that are 1 inch thick, range from 3 to 7 inches in width, and range from 2 to 7 feet in length. These boxes are packed based on board footage and not by board size. Each board is surfaced. These boxes will allow you to rip and chop unique pieces. Expect boards to have natural features such as knots, wane, pith, worm holes, rough edges, and/or splits. Our lumber is not a finished thickness and will require you to flatten, plane, shape or sand your boards to fit your project.
Haven't had a chance to get to it yet had to get a timber frame addition out of the way first. But I will be using it soon. I'll surface plane it and then use my joiner then make some cutting boards. I still have some cherry left that I got from you. That makes a sweet looking board the cheery and walnut. When I am done I'll shoot ya some pics. Thanks guys, and talk to ya soon.
This is the 3rd time I have bought from F2H and I was not disappointed.I use walnut for making cutting boards, Swedish butter knives and other thing that are small so getting wood that is not perfect works for me since I have to cut out the pieces I work with. Good price and free shipping which is also fast is what I like too.Thank you.
I ordered what was described as \"Rustic\" Walnut. The photo on the site showed some very cool looking, interesting, curved, unique, rustic walnut boards. However, what I received would be described better as rough-cut walnut.I ordered ten board feet of rustic walnut. And received about two board feet of rustic walnut, that resembled the pictures in the website. The rest being rough-cut walnut. It was still a good deal and the wood is usable for other things. But, I was expecting something completely different, based on the photos in the website.

However, unfortunately not all black walnut-producing regions are created equal. Depending on the region, color, texture and clarity can wildly differ. Some regions produce extremely fast-growing trees, which results in wide growth rings of 23 growth rings per inch, and therefore quite uninteresting grain patterns. Some regions produce trees that are full of bird pecks, large knots, and extensive pin-knots. Some come from farmland where metals are used for fences that get stapled onto walnut trees, therefore full of metal streaks and stain. Yet, other regions may have soil content that encourages heavy mineral streaks, reddish wood color.
At North Castle Hardwoods, we source black walnut timber and lumber only from the most exclusive regions that produce the best quality (least amount of defects) lumber, excellent color and texture and grain pattern that have become the trade-mark of our walnut lumber and dimension products. In addition, our walnut lumber is always steamed at an optimal condition to ensure the best possible color matching and sap wood stability. 781b155fdc
